The rise of TREATS Dragon Boat team!
"Unity, determination and strength are the most important factors about dragon boating!" The encouragement from the coach has been inspirational for TREATS Dragon Boat team since the first training session.
The team consists of volunteers from corporate and TREATS, staff from TREATS, a social worker and 9 teenagers with mild mental challenge. Once they get on the dragon boat, they are no longer individual sportsman but a single team as said by the coach - attitude is the key for the team, then it comes to the level of cooperation, and finally their strength.
Yeung is a 14-year-old autistic youth and has difficulty in concentrating. During the first training session, it is obvious that he was easily distracted by the surroundings. In the second training, Fung has already set goals in advance with Yeung and highlighted the importance of determination. He has also kept reminding Yeung to focus on the pace and rhythm with teammates as well as looking in front throughout the whole practice. The performance of Yeung has been gradually improved and this has also motivated the whole team to work harder. “Their teamwork was really inspiring as they have developed a close bond within a very short period of time. I will also work harder with my buddy and together we can lead the team to a better level!” said by another volunteer.
Yeung's mother and grandmother, who accompanied and cheered for him on every training session, has been another source of strength for Yeung. Yeung’s mother said that he has always been a quiet kid due to his weak verbal ability. “I am grateful that my son had the opportunity to be part of the dragon boat team with the mainstream teammates.” She smiled and said. “What surprised me so far was that Yeung has already taken the initiative to greet other teammates on the second training session. He’s already a champion in my heart!”
Ka Shun, the team captain, cherished the patience and understanding offered by the coach and mainstream teammates. “Nevertheless, I hoped that they could develop more confidence in the potential of the youth as well as encouraging them to strive for breakthroughs” said Ka Shun. For her, she did not only expect the team to complete the race, but also to win the competition as the ultimate accomplishment.
With the support and encouragement received, TREATS dragon boat team will do their best in the race on Dragon Boat Festival on June 7th while the public would be able to discover the abilities of team members with different abilities and backgrounds as a dream team!
